LinkedIn Job Search: What Actually Works in 2025

hrvstr Team-

LinkedIn has over a billion users.

Every job posted there gets hundreds of applications.

So how do you stand out in a sea of candidates all using the same platform?

The answer isn't applying more — it's using the platform more strategically.

Optimize Before You Apply

Your profile is your landing page.

When a recruiter sees your application, the first thing they do is check your LinkedIn.

Make sure it reinforces your resume, not contradicts it.

Quick wins:

  • Headline should describe what you do and want, not just your current title ("Marketing Manager → B2B SaaS Marketing Leader Seeking Growth Roles")
  • About section should read like a condensed cover letter, not a biography
  • Experience descriptions should include accomplishments, not just responsibilities
  • Skills section should feature the keywords you want to be found for

If your profile looks abandoned (no photo, sparse details, no activity), you're signaling low engagement before you've even applied.

Use Boolean Search Properly

LinkedIn's basic job search is limited.

Boolean operators help you get more specific:

  • AND: "product manager AND B2B" (must have both)
  • OR: "marketing OR growth" (either term works)
  • NOT: "engineer NOT software" (excludes results)
  • Quotes: "customer success manager" (exact phrase)

Combine these to build searches that surface relevant roles instead of noise.

Set Smarter Alerts

Job alerts are only useful if they're targeted.

Set alerts for specific titles, not broad categories.

Create multiple alerts for different variations of roles you're interested in.

Check alerts daily but don't treat them as your only source.

Many roles get filled through networking before they're ever widely posted.

Engage Before You Apply

For roles you're excited about, don't just click "Easy Apply" and move on.

See if you have any connections at the company.

Look up the hiring manager and the team.

A brief, non-pushy message to someone at the company ("I just applied for X role — would love to learn more about the team if you have a few minutes") can make your application memorable.

Don't ask for referrals outright from strangers.

Build rapport first.

The Hidden Job Market Is Real

Many roles are filled before they're publicly posted.

To access them, you need to be visible and engaged on the platform.

Post occasionally about your industry.

Comment thoughtfully on others' posts.

Let your network know you're looking (if you can do so publicly).

The goal is to be top-of-mind when someone in your network hears about an opening.
