Campbell added a 39-yard field goal late in the third quarter to make it 13-3. Early in the fourth, Tony Newsome intercepted Landyn Locke and returned the ball 22 yards, giving the Hilltoppers another short field. Campbell completed the ensuing possession with a 33-yard kick and finished 3-for-3 on field goals.
WKU did not need a large passing total to protect that lead. Glenn completed 14 of 30 passes for 127 yards and the touchdown, without an interception. He also led the team with 54 rushing yards on 22 attempts. The Hilltoppers finished with 276 total yards, including 144 on the ground, and did not turn the ball over.
Westen Ard led the defense with 10 tackles, including 1 1/2 sacks and 2 1/2 tackles for loss. The Hilltoppers recorded three sacks as a team. Sam Houston finished with 112 passing yards and 65 rushing yards, while converting only two third downs.
Locke went 13-for-30 for 112 yards with the interception. MJ Dowdy supplied 55 rushing yards on 14 carries, and Chris Reed caught three passes for 51 yards. Linebacker Dean Ford led Sam Houston with 12 tackles, but the Bearkats’ defensive resistance was not enough to overcome the lack of scoring possessions.
Jonathan Stafford caught five passes for 37 yards for WKU. His 41 receptions this season moved him into third place on the program’s freshman receptions list, according to the Hilltoppers’ postgame report.
WKU has a bye before hosting Delaware on October 27. Sam Houston stays home for an October 21 game against New Mexico State, seeking its first conference win.
