Johnson described the quarterback situation as fluid while saying he felt good about the team’s plan. He said health, the operation of the offense and the quarterback’s rapport with the line and receivers all figure into the decision.
Williams injured his hamstring on a fourth-quarter scramble in Week 2 and has missed three games. Chicago went 2-1 during that stretch, using Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent while its starter recovered. Bagent started the Week 5 loss at Green Bay.
The Bears have a short turnaround after Sunday’s trip to Atlanta: they face New England on Thursday, October 22. Johnson said the staff has considered both the immediate game and the larger picture when weighing its quarterback options.
The next physical practices should give Chicago more information than a walkthrough estimate. A full estimated designation is progress within the week’s reporting process, while the game decision remains separate.
Atlanta’s quarterback also is managing an injury. Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday that Michael Penix Jr. is expected to start despite a rib injury as long as his week goes according to plan. Penix is beginning with limited work.
Both teams therefore enter the matchup with an intended path for their injured starters and decisions still tied to the practice week. For Williams, Wednesday’s supported development is the full walkthrough estimate. Johnson has not named him the starter for Sunday.
