Washington’s role will depend on more than who hears his name before tipoff. May said the staff has different lineups penciled in because injuries and back-to-backs will change availability. He would personally prefer extra playing time or a place in the finishing group to the distinction of starting.
That leaves Washington with several ways to contribute: bringing the ball up, screening, defending bigger players or taking a perimeter assignment. Washington said he has worked on his shot mechanics, playmaking and rhythm in the offense. He also described being more vocal as a responsibility that comes with becoming a veteran.
His shooting work has a practical purpose. Washington said a more consistent three-point shot would force defenders to stay with him, opening driving lanes and chances to create for teammates. He described the Mavericks as playing off Cooper Flagg’s ability to make plays and take his shots, while Kyrie Irving’s presence draws attention that helps everyone else.
May also discussed the players competing for the minutes around them. He praised Max Christie’s first step, speed and defense, and said Naji Marshall’s jumper could create more room for his passing and drives.
Rookie Morez Johnson Jr. is still working toward full clearance. May said Thursday that Johnson was getting closer and that his physical play was noticeable when he participated. Wednesday’s lower-leg soreness update, reported separately by Dallas Morning News’ Mike Curtis, remains the relevant injury context; Thursday’s comments do not establish unrestricted practice or game availability.
