Wallace extension adds another long-term bill after Thunder’s Dort trade

The reported five-year, $139 million agreement rewards Oklahoma City’s steals leader while tightening its future payroll.

Oklahoma City traded Luguentz Dort this summer with confidence that Cason Wallace could handle more responsibility. A reported five-year, $139 million extension now gives that decision a substantial financial commitment.

Wallace's agents told ESPN's Shams Charania on Sunday that the guard had agreed to the rookie-scale extension. The NBA carried the deal as an ESPN report. The Thunder's team news page reviewed Monday did not supply a separate statement confirming the terms.

The basketball case is clear enough. Wallace made the All-Defensive Second Team last season, led the league with 150 steals and averaged career highs of 8.6 points, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals. He is expected to take a starting backcourt role alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander following Dort's departure to Atlanta.

The cost belongs in the same discussion. ESPN reported that, with Wallace's agreement, 13 of the Thunder's 14 rostered players are under contract for 2027-28. Bobby Marks projects Oklahoma City roughly $26 million over the second apron that season and says its tax bill could exceed $200 million.

That is a forecast, dependent on the roster and other financial decisions still to come. It nevertheless shows how retaining a young contributor can add to an already expensive group even after the team parts with a veteran defender in a cost-cutting trade.

General manager Sam Presti had linked the Dort trade to Wallace's development during his media availability before training camp. He said the organization thought highly of Wallace and viewed the move as a sign of confidence in the role available to him. The extension follows that explanation with a reported commitment extending well beyond the coming season.

Wallace has provided Oklahoma City with a steady presence since the 2023 draft. ESPN lists 227 regular-season appearances, 114 starts and participation in all 48 of the Thunder's playoff games during his tenure. His role has grown while his defense has earned league recognition.

The 22-year-old shot 35.6 percent from three-point range in 77 games last season, according to the NBA. His current team profile lists averages of 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists for 2025-26. Oklahoma City is paying to keep that defensive foundation while giving him room for a larger assignment.

The reported deal also addresses Wallace's approaching restricted free agency next summer. For the Thunder, the immediate result is continuity in the backcourt. The remaining decisions concern how the rest of the roster fits around the commitments already made for 2027-28.
