Memphis led 64-51 at halftime and opened the third quarter on an 18-4 run to go up 82-55. The lead reached 27, and Utah trailed by at least 15 throughout the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies outrebounded the Jazz 55-38 and outscored them 58-46 in the paint.
Jerami Grant, who came over from Portland in the offseason trade that sent Morant to the Trail Blazers, scored 15. Jaylen Wells and GG Jackson added 12 each, and Wells had four steals.
The night also matched the top two picks from June's draft. Utah took Darryn Peterson of Kansas second overall, and Memphis took Duke's Cameron Boozer third. Peterson scored nine points. Boozer had seven points, 11 rebounds and five assists but shot 2 of 15, including 0 for 6 from 3.
Keyonte George led Utah with 22 points and Lauri Markkanen scored 18. Jaren Jackson Jr., playing in Memphis for the first time since the Grizzlies traded him to Utah at last February's deadline, scored 15 before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Jaxson Hayes blocked a career-high six shots.
Up next: Memphis plays at Golden State on Friday, and Utah hosts New Orleans the same night.
