CBS and Tony Romo part ways; J.J. Watt stays in lead NFL booth

Watt will continue with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for the rest of the season.

CBS Sports and Tony Romo have agreed to end their partnership, the network announced Friday. J.J. Watt will remain alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on CBS' lead NFL broadcast team for the rest of the season.

The announcement settles a role Watt had already taken during Romo's absence. Romo had been on leave since July following his arrest in Wisconsin for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He pleaded no contest on September 1.

CBS Texas covered the decision in an October 2 news segment.

Romo joined CBS for the 2017 season after his playing career with Dallas. Friday's decision ends nine years with the network.

Romo said he would take time away from work to focus on his health and family before choosing his next opportunity. His statement does not identify a new broadcasting job.

CBS said its other announcing teams will stay the same, including Ian Eagle, Ross Tucker and Evan Washburn.

He is working with doctors and plans to return to CBS

Ari Meirov posted that CBS analyst Tony Romo released a statement. In it, Romo said multiple back surgeries led to a dependence on pain medication, and that his efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.
