What changed

Rubin has crossed from construction and commissioning into steady LSST survey operations. Its 3.2-gigapixel camera can capture a broad patch of sky in one exposure and return to it again and again. That repeated coverage creates a time record suited to finding asteroids, supernovae, variable stars, gravitational lenses, and other change. Automated alerts can direct other telescopes quickly, while the accumulated survey supports maps of the Milky Way, dark matter, and large-scale cosmic structure.

What remains unproved

First images and the start of operations do not guarantee a flawless ten-year survey. Weather, hardware uptime, image quality, calibration, alert quality, software reliability, satellite trails, and data-access tools will shape the scientific return. The system must distinguish real changes from artifacts at immense scale and distribute useful notices quickly. Researchers also need enough computing and support to work with the data. A large archive only becomes discovery when its measurements remain consistent and usable.

What to watch

Watch the cadence and quality of public alerts, the first moving-object discoveries, and the observatory's measured uptime through difficult weather. Early data releases will show whether calibration and access systems work for scientists beyond the core team. Particularly important are discoveries that depend on repeated coverage rather than a single deep exposure: faint objects whose brightness changes, fast transients, and small bodies moving through the Solar System. Those results will prove the value of the survey's movie-like design.
