NFL teams cut from 90 to 53

NFL teams must turn 90-man camps into 53-man rosters. Contracts, injuries, and special-teams value decide who stays. The first 53 is a first draft, not the season.

NFL teams have to turn crowded camps into initial 53-man rosters. They protect scarce positions, plan injured-reserve moves, and guess which waived players will clear. A dependable special-teamer can beat a flashier reserve. A manageable contract can beat a familiar name. Treat the first 53 as a first draft of the season, not a closed argument.

Public depth charts and team priorities are not the same list. A reserve can survive because he covers two positions, plays on four kicking units, or lets a club skip an immediate outside signing. Another player can lose a job after a productive preseason because his role duplicates a starter. The question is not only who looked better in August. It is what problem each club had to solve before Week 1.

Final is the wrong word. Waiver claims, practice-squad returns, short-term injured-reserve tags, and late trades will change these rosters again. Clubs are buying options as much as picking players. The least secure jobs often sit low on the salary sheet. Follow those next moves. Do not grade every cut as permanent.
