The Mavericks bought out Klay Thompson and he signed with Miami

Dallas announced the buyout Aug. 21; Thompson cleared waivers and signed a two-year deal with the Heat two days later.

The Mavericks announced a buyout with Klay Thompson on Aug. 21, 2026. In two Dallas seasons he played 141 games (80 starts) and averaged 12.9 points on 40.3% shooting and 38.7% from three.

He was due $17.5 million in the final year of his deal. Reports said he gave up about $9.5 million to leave, then signed a two-year deal with Miami worth about $11.5 million, with a player option on the second year, after clearing waivers Aug. 23. Masai Ujiri called him one of the great competitors of his generation. ESPN depth charts that still list Thompson in Dallas are out of date.
