Keenan Allen signed with Indianapolis in late August

Indianapolis added Keenan Allen on Aug. 19, after most offseason roster building was complete. The timing let the Colts judge their young receivers, identify a missing skill, and add experience without treating the move as a full reset of the room.

The club described Allen as a tactical fit rather than a generic veteran name. Route knowledge and the ability to solve specific coverages can complement younger receivers with different jobs. That makes the purchase easier to measure than a broad promise of leadership.

The one-year structure limits the length of the bet. For an RSO contender, the same idea applies: wait when the market may produce a useful veteran, then pay for the role and season you need instead of buying a long reputation.

Buying late is not buying blind. Confirm the expected role, health case, guaranteed commitment, and whose snaps are at risk. A short deal works when it solves a defined problem and leaves the roster free to change again.
