Coach Dan Quinn had said after Monday's 23-17 loss that he feared a significant injury and that McLaurin would undergo scans Tuesday. NBC Sports' Josh Alper reported the team's concern about a season-ending injury at 7:17 a.m. Eastern. No MRI result or recovery timetable had been announced in those reports.

Earlier reporting

Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin was carted off with a left knee injury late in the first quarter of Monday night's game at San Francisco, and the team ruled him out for the rest of the night, according to the Commanders and ESPN.

What is confirmed

McLaurin went down while running a route on third-and-9 with 2:16 left in the first quarter. ESPN says his left leg appeared to buckle as he cut near the Washington sideline, and trainers put an air cast on the leg before he was helped onto the cart. The Commanders posted at about 9:00 PM ET that he is out, and Adam Schefter said the team made it official.

He had already caught a 27-yard pass on the opening drive, which set up a field goal. Coming into the night, McLaurin was second on the team with 15 catches and led Washington with 230 receiving yards.

What is still unknown

There is no diagnosis yet. Ian Rapoport called it a potentially serious knee injury, and Mike Garafolo wrote that McLaurin's season now seems likely to be cut short. Treat those as early reads until Washington announces imaging results, which usually come Tuesday.

This is McLaurin's second injury of the season. He missed Week 4 against the Colts with a hamstring problem and returned the next week. He is 31 and missed seven games in 2025.

What RSO owners should do now

If you roster McLaurin, plan as if he is out for an extended stretch. Set your next lineup without him, and if your league allows it, be ready to move him to an IR slot as soon as Washington makes a roster move.

For contract leagues, his salary keeps counting against your cap while he sits, so look at whether you can absorb it this season or need to shop him in the offseason once the injury is known. Do not cut him in a panic before a diagnosis.

Stefon Diggs, who was active tonight, becomes Washington's top veteran receiver. Check your waiver wire for the Commanders receivers behind him, since their targets should rise with McLaurin out.

What to watch next

Watch for Tuesday MRI results, any injured reserve placement, and whether Washington adds a receiver this week. Also keep an eye on how the targets split behind Diggs in the second half tonight.
