Ron Harper Jr. spent much of his summer working at the Auerbach Center after earning a multiyear extension with Boston. In an August 11 team interview, he described staying close to the coaches and following their development plan.
His contract path moved quickly: an Exhibit 10 opportunity became a two-way deal, then a standard NBA contract, followed by the July extension. The next step is playing time. The team's report names Sam Hauser, Baylor Scheierman and Hugo Gonzalez among the wings competing with him.
Harper also said he looks forward to learning from Jayson Tatum and Paul George. He agreed to let George wear No. 13 and will switch to No. 8.
The extension supplies continuity. A regular rotation place still has to be earned when Boston returns to the floor.

The NBA audition behind the extension
His first NBA start came in Houston in February. Harper contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists in a 114-93 Boston win, playing 33 minutes. He made three of seven three-point attempts.
That performance gives the contract story a specific basketball reference: a larger assignment against NBA opposition. The February recap records the contribution well before the summer extension.
A family matchup on the way
Harper's February also included the Rising Stars event in Los Angeles. The affiliate's February 14 account records seven rebounds and two assists for the G League group coached by Austin Rivers.
The first matchup put him across from his brother Dylan, a San Antonio rookie playing for Team Melo. It was their first meeting as NBA players. Dylan supplied the deciding jumper in a 40-34 result, under the showcase's target-score format.
Ron became the second Maine player selected for Rising Stars, following JD Davison the previous year. It was a different kind of opportunity from his Houston start: a league showcase with a family connection, rather than a regular-season rotation assignment. Together, those February appearances explain how varied the stops were on his way to the extension. The summer agreement followed both NBA minutes and recognition for his work in the development league.
