Rangers fall 6-4 to Twins in Game 162 and miss the postseason

Texas needed a win and an Astros loss to claim the AL West. A late Corey Seager homer could not erase Minnesota's lead.

The Rangers' path into October ended Sunday with a 6-4 loss to the Twins at Target Field. Texas needed both a win in Minnesota and a Houston loss to the Athletics to take the American League West. The first condition failed, making the other result irrelevant to the Rangers' elimination. MLB's final game report records the 6-4 score.

Minnesota scored first on Josh Bell's sacrifice fly. Danny Jansen tied it with a solo homer in the third, but Bell answered with a two-run shot in the bottom half. Ryan Jeffers drew a bases-loaded walk and Kody Clemens singled in another run in the fifth, moving the Twins ahead 5-1. Royce Lewis homered in the eighth. MLB's inning-by-inning game story documents those turning points.

Texas got solo home runs from Elias Díaz and Jansen and a two-run shot from Corey Seager in the ninth. The late swing narrowed the deficit to two, but Andrew Morris got Ezequiel Duran for the final out. The Rangers finished 80-82 after entering the final game with a chance to win a division that remained tightly packed despite the teams' losing records.

The offense had little room for error. In MLB's clubhouse report, Texas managed only three baserunners through seven innings against starter Dean Kremer. Josh Jung and Joc Pederson were unavailable with fractures, leaving two productive hitters out of the final push. MacKenzie Gore worked 2 1/3 innings and allowed one run before Texas turned to its bullpen.

Manager Skip Schumaker pointed beyond Sunday's loss, citing the team's poor road results and record against clubs below .500. Texas finished 35-46 away from home and 51-53 against losing teams, according to MLB's season review. The Rangers won the World Series in 2023 and have now missed the playoffs for three straight seasons. Sunday's loss was the final result, but the longer record explains why one game still controlled their season.
