No. 19 SMU beats Florida State 27-24 on a late field goal

Nick Reed's 20-yard kick with 21 seconds left won it after a power-outage delay at Doak Campbell.

No. 19 SMU beat Florida State 27-24 on Monday night, September 7, 2026, at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Nick Reed hit a 20-yard field goal with 21 seconds left after Kevin Jennings drove the Mustangs into range. Jennings threw for three touchdowns and overcame two interceptions and four SMU turnovers.

Kickoff was delayed nearly two hours after a transformer failed at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game started around 9:15 p.m. with limited stadium power — no coach-to-player radios, no tablets, no PA, and no working scoreboard.

SMU took a 17-10 lead into halftime. Florida State tied it at 17-17 in the third on an Ousmane Kromah run, then answered Yannick Smith's 79-yard touchdown catch with Samuel Singleton Jr.'s 39-yard score to make it 24-24. Reed's kick finished it.
