NFL answers accountability calls with suspensions for two officials

A union complaint and a firsthand sideline account preceded discipline for Jeff Seeman. Adrian Hill also receives a one-game suspension.

The players’ union asked the NFL to hold officials accountable for their behavior toward players. On Monday, the league suspended line judge Jeff Seeman for two games and referee Adrian Hill for one after separate incidents in Sunday’s games.

The suspensions followed a public complaint by NFLPA executive director JC Tretter about Seeman’s exchange with Cardinals tight end Trey McBride. Tretter argued that officials should face the same standard applied to players. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the league described the conduct behind both suspensions as unprofessional.

Seeman’s incident took place late in Arizona’s loss to the Giants. The Associated Press reported that McBride had been seeking a flag after contact on a third-and-2 pass with just under five minutes remaining. A sideline camera showed Seeman appearing to swear toward the tight end.

That sequence prompted a review, but there was also a firsthand account beyond the video. CBS sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala said she was standing beside the exchange. She described McBride as upset and pleading for a pass-interference call, but said she did not hear him swear at Seeman.

The union’s criticism and the reporter’s account raised questions about the official’s response to a player contesting a decision. Monday’s two-game suspension supplies a concrete consequence for Seeman’s conduct.

Hill’s one-game suspension concerned a different encounter in Minnesota’s win over Miami. Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson was knocked into the referee after the whistle. Hill fell, got back up and confronted Wilson.

Wilson said afterward that he apologized and explained the collision. He also said Hill understood what had happened and told him he was trying to stop a fight. Wilson’s account described a conversation that had been resolved between them, while the NFL still decided disciplinary action was warranted.

The length of each suspension is now public. The distinction between a player’s explanation, an official’s behavior on camera and the league’s disciplinary response matters in assessing the two incidents. The NFL has acted on conduct that drew scrutiny during the games, following a union demand for accountability.
