The play that put it out of reach was a short one. With Miami up 21-17, Willis flipped the ball to rookie Caleb Douglas, who kept his feet inbounds along the sideline and ran for a 63-yard touchdown with 4:44 left. Douglas also caught a 7-yard score on the opening drive, which gave Miami its first lead in any game this season.
New York didn't go away. On fourth-and-4, Geno Smith threw short to Isaiah Davis, who ran 41 yards to the Miami 18. Three plays later Smith found tight end Mason Taylor in the back corner for a 12-yard touchdown, his second of the day. Penalties wiped out the Jets' first two tries at a two-point conversion before Smith hit Taylor again to make it 28-25 with 3:24 left. Miami got the ball back and Willis pushed ahead for 2 yards on fourth-and-1 to end it.
The Dolphins controlled most of the first half. Ollie Gordon II scored on a 1-yard run to cap a 14-play drive, and Willis scrambled in from 2 yards with 6 seconds left in the half for a 21-7 lead. Between those scores, Michael Taaffe intercepted Smith at the Miami 21.
The Jets got within 21-14 on Omar Cooper Jr.'s 3-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, set up by his 60-yard reception. They later reached the Miami 1 and came away with a 33-yard Jason Sanders field goal. Sanders, a longtime Dolphins kicker, also hit the right upright from 40 yards.
