James Madison accepts American invitation, sets move for no later than 2028

The Dukes will leave the Sun Belt after a unanimous board vote; JMU says new private gifts and corporate funding cover both conference fees.

James Madison is leaving the Sun Belt for the American Conference. The university announced Monday that its Board of Visitors voted unanimously to apply for and accept an invitation, with membership to begin no later than July 1, 2028.

The decision gives the Dukes a new conference destination while leaving the precise transition date open within that deadline. JMU's athletics FAQ says the decision follows its continuing evaluation of conference options.

The financial explanation is unusually specific. JMU says gifts designated for the move will cover the Sun Belt exit fee, while new corporate partnerships will cover the American entry fee. The university says it will not use tuition, student fees or state taxpayer funding for those two costs. Neither the president's announcement nor the FAQ gives a dollar amount for the fees.

The FAQ also says JMU was not actively seeking to leave the Sun Belt. It describes the decision as part of the university's continuing evaluation of where its athletics program can compete and grow.

The American's football membership includes Army and Navy alongside programs such as Memphis, Tulane, East Carolina, North Texas and UTSA. Those are potential future conference opponents under the announced move; JMU has not published a new football schedule through this announcement.

Independent coverage from the Deseret News places the move in the Dukes' recent football rise, following the program's time under Curt Cignetti and Bob Chesney. The football success supplies context for the conference decision. Monday's approved invitation and the 2028 deadline are the immediate change.

Pete Thamel's Monday reporting described the board vote as the move emerged. The university's announcement and FAQ now supply the formal decision and funding terms.
