Jaishawn Barham takes Cowboys green-dot role after Overshown injury

Dallas will ask the rookie linebacker to handle the defensive communication job while DeMarvion Overshown misses Week 2 with a hamstring strain.

Dallas is turning to rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham for the green-dot communication role in Week 2 after DeMarvion Overshown was ruled out with a hamstring strain. The Cowboys' Friday update says Barham will start at MIKE and relay defensive coordinator Christian Parker's calls to the huddle against Washington.

Overshown's injury is expected to keep him out one to two weeks, which makes this a short-term substitution with a real tactical consequence. The green dot is not a new defensive scheme by itself, but it puts the rookie at the center of the pre-snap communication that keeps the front and coverage checks connected.

Barham's path to the assignment has been visible since Dallas selected him in the third round. The Cowboys' official spring video discussed the possibility of him competing for the MIKE role, and Friday's update supplies the first regular-season test of that projection.

The assignment also gives Dallas a clean Week 2 evaluation. If Barham can set fronts and communicate without slowing the defense, the Cowboys gain a flexible answer while Overshown heals. If the operation becomes hesitant, Washington can stress the middle with tempo and formation changes.
