Iowa’s 39 rushing yards put Ohio State’s defensive control in focus

The Buckeyes limited the ground game while collecting two sacks and an early takeaway.

Ohio State held Iowa to 39 rushing yards in its 31-14 road win, according to the official game-center statistics. That total gives the defensive performance a clear identity. Iowa finished with 238 yards of offense, and its rushing production represented only a small part of that total. The result is a useful reference for fans watching the next matchup.

A low team rushing number needs careful interpretation. In college box scores, sacks affect the team’s rushing total, so the final figure does not describe running-back carries alone. Ohio State’s official account records two sacks and four tackles for loss. Those plays belong in the explanation without turning the 39-yard total into a claim that every conventional run was stopped.

The early defensive impact also reached the scoreboard. Kenyatta Jackson Jr.’s strip sack was recovered by Christian Alliegro, according to the university. That gave Ohio State an immediate possession opportunity. Iowa’s postgame report says the Hawkeyes lost the turnover battle 2-0 and the Buckeyes converted those turnovers into 14 points.

Our analysis is that the defense influenced the game through both sustained limitation and abrupt changes of possession. Those are related but distinct achievements. A team can allow few yards without generating a turnover; it can also force a turnover during a game in which the opponent moves the ball. Saturday’s performance questions should leave room for that difference.

Against Maryland, watch the types of possessions the Buckeyes force. Do the Terrapins keep an available ground option, or do they reach situations where a pass becomes more likely? Do negative plays arrive early enough to change the next decision? These are things to observe during the game, rather than assumptions about an unpublished defensive plan.

The Iowa total sets a demanding comparison for the following Saturday. Repeating it is not necessary for another effective defensive day. The more useful assessment is whether Ohio State keeps scoring opportunities under control and forces Maryland to earn its progress, possession by possession. Final points and final yardage will each tell part of that story.
