Jacksonville had repeatedly fought its way back. Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdown passes and finished 24 of 41 for 306 yards. Hunter caught four passes for 59 yards, including the 7-yard touchdown with 11:26 left that brought the Jaguars within 31-28.
The defense leaves too much work
The Jaguars allowed 426 yards, with C.J. Stroud completing 24 of 34 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Houston did not allow a sack. Jaylin Noel caught four passes for 107 yards, and Nico Collins added three receptions for 74.
The Texans also moved the ball on the ground. Woody Marks ran 15 times for 56 yards, and Jawhar Jordan's 25-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter rebuilt a 10-point lead moments after Jacksonville had cut the margin to three.
The timing of Houston's scores repeatedly undid Jacksonville's progress. Bhayshul Tuten caught his second touchdown of the first half with 55 seconds left, giving the Jaguars a 14-10 lead. Stroud answered with Foster Moreau's second touchdown catch, a 1-yarder with eight seconds remaining.
Houston carried that 17-14 lead into halftime and added Noel's 13-yard touchdown on its first possession of the second half. A Jacksonville too-many-men penalty on a punt had kept the drive alive.
Hunter creates the late opening
Lawrence found rookie Nate Boerkircher for a 1-yard score before Jordan's long touchdown run. Hunter then supplied the next touchdown and the interception that gave Jacksonville a possession with a chance to take the lead.
Coach Liam Coen addressed Hunter's contribution on both sides of the ball in the Jaguars' official postgame interview:
