New Mexico keeps a damaged first half close
Sean Olvera-Harle opened the scoring with a 27-yard field goal after a New Mexico interception. Hawaii added a one-yard Alejado touchdown pass to Titan Lacaden with six seconds left before halftime. The Lobos' official report counted 12 first-half penalties for 95 yards.
Hawaii could not sustain that advantage against the run. New Mexico finished with 243 rushing yards to the Rainbow Warriors' 48, repeatedly using its backs and quarterback Toa Fa'avae to move the ball after halftime. Scottre Humphrey gained 90 yards on 15 carries, and Kiefer Sibley added 87 on 17.
The first Lobos touchdown also required a surprise throw. On fourth-and-2 at the Hawaii 40, receiver Bailen George threw a 35-yard pass to Fa'avae. Humphrey eventually scored from a yard out to cut the lead to 10-7.
Hawaii then intercepted Fa'avae again and drove 89 yards before losing the ball. Alejado's 47-yard pass to Josiah Fetui set up first-and-goal at the 8. Darren Agu dropped DeVon Rice for a four-yard loss; after an incompletion, Speech forced Alejado's fumble on third down.
Two runs finish the reversal
The touchback started a 12-play, 80-yard New Mexico possession. Fa'avae scored from 21 yards out on third-and-5 with 6:57 left, finally putting the Lobos ahead. After a Hawaii punt, Humphrey needed one play to cover 49 yards for his second touchdown.
Alejado completed 23 of 40 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown, but his final possession ended in an interception by Tavian Combs. New Mexico ran out the remaining clock.
The Rainbow Warriors had opportunities to build on every New Mexico mistake. They finished with only 298 yards, converted three of 13 third downs and scored nothing after halftime. The goal-line turnover was the most costly of those missed chances, handing the Lobos the ball before their winning drive.
