Dallas named Dusty May the 11th head coach in franchise history on June 23, 2026, hours before the draft, replacing Jason Kidd after a 26-56 season. May, 49, had just won Michigan's first NCAA title in 37 years and went 64-13 in two Ann Arbor seasons.
He is the first college head coach to jump straight to an NBA job since John Beilein in 2019, and the first to leave immediately after a national title since Larry Brown in 1988. Dallas introduced him on June 29. May said he will lean on Kyrie Irving early as a first-time NBA coach. The same night, Dallas drafted one of May's Michigan players.
