Cubs drop both games at Fenway: a lost lead, then a shutout

Chicago fell 4-3 in the opener and 2-0 in the nightcap. Read each game report and the moments that decided them.

The Cubs lost both games of Friday's split doubleheader at Fenway Park, but the two results came by different routes. Chicago led 3-0 early in the opener and lost 4-3 after Boston's comeback. The nightcap stayed scoreless through seven innings before Wilyer Abreu's two-run double made it a 2-0 Red Sox win. These were separate completed games, each with its own box score and recap.

In the opener, the Cubs scored in each of the first two innings. Their lead disappeared as Roman Anthony scored three times and Adley Rutschman drove in two. Chicago's pitchers kept the game close, but the offense did not score again after Amaya's double. Boston's bullpen held the line long enough for Wong's decisive hit.

The nightcap was lower scoring throughout. Chicago had seven hits, including two each from Seiya Suzuki, Michael Busch and Nico Hoerner, but left six runners on base and grounded into two double plays. Boston had only four hits and likewise left six runners on base, yet Abreu converted its eighth-inning opportunity. Brayan Bello and Jedixson Paez combined for the shutout.

The linked reports carry the play sequence, pitching lines and official same-game video. The common result is a Friday sweep for Boston; the Cubs' missed early lead in Game 1 and missed scoring chances in Game 2 explain how it happened.
