Cowboys leave four defenders off Rio trip for Ravens game

Overshown, Durant, Locke and Hooker are ruled out; Dallas must set its defensive rotations before Sunday.

Dallas will face Baltimore in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday without four defenders it had hoped to have available. The Cowboys' Thursday roster update says linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, cornerback Cobie Durant and safeties P.J. Locke and Malik Hooker have been ruled out and will not make the trip to Brazil. The team disclosed the decision before its Thursday night flight. It is a firmer status than the midweek practice report, when the four were listed as nonparticipants but their game availability was not yet final.

Overshown and Durant are dealing with hamstring injuries. Locke hurt his foot against Washington in Week 2, while Hooker continues to recover from a fractured forearm. The club says Hooker will remain out at least until Week 4; that does not establish a definite return date. Dallas is 1-1 entering the first NFL regular-season game in Rio, scheduled for 4:25 p.m. Eastern on Sunday at Maracanã Stadium.

The confirmed absences deepen a specific defensive challenge against quarterback Lamar Jackson. Durant started Dallas' first two games and logged 87 defensive snaps, while Hooker started the opener and Locke started Week 2, according to NBC Sports' independent report. Overshown started the opener. Those appearances show that the absences cover multiple levels of the defense, rather than just one position group. The Cowboys have not, in this update, named replacements or announced a new starting lineup, so those decisions remain open.

Earlier in the week, coach Brian Schottenheimer said Durant and Locke could miss multiple weeks after their Week 2 injuries. Thursday's decision confirms only their absence against Baltimore, not a longer designation or an injured-reserve move. The team's injury account also said Locke had torn the plantar fascia in his foot. The club's later travel update is the controlling source for Sunday's availability.

Dallas' broader matchup remains the one outlined in our Rio preview: Jackson can threaten with both his arm and legs, and the trip adds preparation time to manage. The new fact is the roster certainty. Dallas now has to settle its secondary and linebacker rotations without four veterans before Sunday, while Baltimore's final injury designations and both teams' inactive lists will provide the last personnel answers. The game is scheduled to air on CBS and Paramount+ in the United States, according to the NFL's game announcement.
