Coinbase completes Deribit integration as U.S. options rollout approaches

The international migration finished October 1; eligible U.S. Prime options access follows a separate schedule.

Coinbase says it has completed Deribit’s integration into its global derivatives business, consolidating exchange infrastructure while preparing a separate options rollout for eligible U.S. institutional clients.

The company’s October 7 announcement calls the combined business Coinbase Global Exchange. Its help documentation dates the migration of Coinbase International Exchange accounts, balances and positions to October 1. That completed transition and the planned U.S. options service have different timelines.

Coinbase says Deribit-powered options, spot margin and unified portfolios will roll out in the coming weeks. It also plans to bring back Coinbase Pro at the end of the year as a professional trading platform. Those are announced product plans, rather than evidence that every listed feature is available today.

U.S. options access remains a separate rollout

The updated help page lists fourth-quarter availability for eligible U.S. Prime clients’ crypto options. Onboarding is open, but it tells those clients to consult their account manager about eligibility and timing. U.S. retail availability will be announced separately.

For existing International Exchange institutions, the migration involved cancelling open perpetual orders, settling positions at the mark price, transferring balances and recreating positions at the same settlement price. The documentation says clients must also update their API connections to the combined platform. Existing Deribit accounts retain their positions and settings.

Cointelegraph’s October 7 report corroborates the completed international migration and describes the planned route through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets for eligible U.S. clients. Its report likewise places Prime options access in the coming weeks.

The regulatory foundation predates this week’s integration announcement. On May 29, CFTC staff issued an interpretation addressing certain Deribit perpetual contracts as foreign futures, together with conditional no-action relief concerning customer crypto collateral posted through Coinbase Financial Markets to an affiliated foreign broker.

That staff position concerns a specific structure and specified conditions. It should not be read as blanket permission for every customer to trade every product. Coinbase’s own announcement says product availability and the providing entity vary by jurisdiction and eligibility.

The operational milestone is the completed consolidation. The next milestones are the promised products becoming available to eligible clients and publication of the remaining U.S. access details.
