Cobie Durant starts rehab as Cowboys assess a thin secondary for Baltimore

P.J. Locke has left his walking boot, but DeMarvion Overshown remains unlikely for Sunday's Rio game, according to coach Brian Schottenheimer's Wednesday update.

Cobie Durant is starting on-field rehabilitation for his hamstring injury, and P.J. Locke has come out of the walking boot protecting his foot. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer gave those updates Wednesday as Dallas prepared for Sunday's game against Baltimore in Rio de Janeiro. The progress is real, but he did not clear either defensive back to play.

The Cowboys posted a clip of Schottenheimer's injury update Wednesday.

Durant strained his hamstring late in the first half of Dallas's 37-20 win over Washington on Sunday. Locke tore the plantar fascia in his foot on the Commanders' opening drive. Schottenheimer said Monday that both could miss multiple weeks, leaving their status for Baltimore uncertain despite Wednesday's steps forward.

DeMarvion Overshown is also recovering from a hamstring strain. Schottenheimer said Wednesday that the linebacker is making progress but described his chance of playing the Ravens as low. Overshown missed the Washington game, when rookie Jaishawn Barham started in his place and handled the defensive green-dot communication role. Safety Malik Hooker, who fractured his forearm against the Giants, is still rehabbing.

Dallas's immediate question is how to cover the missing snaps if the injured starters cannot go. Markquese Bell replaced Locke against Washington, while Shavon Revel Jr. stepped in for Durant, according to Dallas Sports Journal's account from the game. Schottenheimer's Wednesday press conference also centered on Barham's role and the need for communication against Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. That makes the next practice report and final game designations more useful than treating the start of rehab as a return announcement.

Dallas leaves for Brazil after Thursday's practice in Frisco. CBS Texas reported that the team plans a Friday practice in Rio and a Saturday walk-around at Maracanã Stadium. Sunday is still several days away, but the Cowboys' thin secondary and Overshown's doubtful outlook shape how much of the defensive plan must be carried by Bell, Revel and Barham.
