Chourio’s walk-off single puts Brewers up 2–0 on Padres

Three ninth-inning walks set up a two-run hit as Milwaukee rallies for a 4–3 win in NLDS Game 2.

Jackson Chourio singled home two runs with two outs in the ninth inning Sunday, turning a 3–2 deficit into a 4–3 Brewers victory over the Padres in NLDS Game 2. Milwaukee leads the best-of-five series 2–0 after winning both games at American Family Field by one run.

The Brewers entered the ninth with only four hits. Mason Miller had retired all three batters in the eighth, striking out Brice Turang and Jake Bauers before getting William Contreras to fly out. He returned needing three more outs to protect San Diego's lead.

Garrett Mitchell grounded out to begin the ninth. Christian Yelich then walked and stole second, and Sal Frelick drew another walk. Pinch-hitter Andrew Vaughn flew to center, leaving Milwaukee one out from defeat. Gary Sánchez's full-count walk loaded the bases, and Joey Ortiz replaced him as a pinch-runner.

Chourio reached a two-strike count, fouled off a pitch and worked the count to 2–2. His sixth-pitch single into center scored Yelich and Frelick, ending the game before San Diego could record the final out. It was Chourio's only hit of the afternoon; it also accounted for half of Milwaukee's runs.

San Diego had led since the first inning. Manny Machado walked with two outs, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Ty France's single. France went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and supplied another run in the seventh, singling home Fernando Tatis Jr. to make it 3–1. Machado was thrown out at third on that play.

Milwaukee's errors had helped create the deficit. Luis Campusano scored in the fifth when Dustin Harris reached on a fielder's choice and Cooper Pratt made a throwing error. Tatis reached on David Hamilton's error in the seventh before France drove him home.

The Brewers answered both times. Yelich doubled and scored on Frelick's fifth-inning single. In the seventh, Mitchell scored when Hamilton reached on Jake Cronenworth's fielding error. Milwaukee still trailed 3–2 after Chourio grounded out to end that inning.

Both starters completed five innings. Michael King allowed one run on three hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter. Logan Henderson allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Each threw 72 pitches and faced one batter in the sixth before being replaced.

San Diego threatened again in the eighth with singles by Jackson Merrill and pinch-hitter Samad Taylor. Aaron Ashby struck out Xander Bogaerts, then got Freddy Fermin to ground into a double play. Trevor Megill worked a perfect ninth and earned the victory when Chourio delivered in the bottom half.

Miller finished with two runs allowed, three walks and two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Both teams had five hits. Game 3 is Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. Eastern in San Diego, where the Padres must begin a three-game winning streak to advance.
