Canadiens lose captain Nick Suzuki for two to four weeks with an upper-body injury

Suzuki will miss games for the first time in more than seven NHL seasons, ending a 546-game streak. Montreal plays at Chicago on Friday.

Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki will be out two to four weeks with an upper-body injury, the team announced Thursday.

The Canadiens did not say what the injury is. According to ESPN, a shot hit Suzuki's left hand in Tuesday's overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks.

Suzuki still finished that game with a goal and an assist. San Jose won 4-3 at Bell Centre when Macklin Celebrini scored his second goal of the night on a power play 2:13 into overtime.

The missed games will be the first of Suzuki's career, which is now in its eighth season. His run of 546 consecutive games played was the second-longest among active players, behind Brent Burns at 1,017, and ranked 20th in NHL history, per ESPN.

Suzuki is also one of the league's best two-way centers, and his scoring has gone up in each of the past five seasons, peaking at a career-high 101 points last year.

The Canadiens are 4-3-2 through nine games. The team gave no details beyond the two-to-four-week range.

Montreal's next two games are on the road: at the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday at 8 p.m. ET and at the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET.

What to watch: who centers Montreal's top line in Chicago, and whether the Canadiens give any update on the hand once Suzuki is re-evaluated.
