Ben Brown returns as Erick Hunter joins the Patriots roster

The Patriots added two very different kinds of experience to their 53-man roster on September 1. Center Ben Brown returned, while rookie linebacker Erick Hunter joined after his release from Detroit.

The team's transaction announcement describes Brown as a player with experience at both center and left guard in New England. He started ten games at center in 2024 and appeared in all 17 regular-season games in 2025, making four starts at left guard.

Hunter's professional résumé is much shorter. Detroit signed him as an undrafted rookie in May and released him August 30. The Patriots then brought him onto their active roster.

For anyone who lost track during cutdown week, there is a reason Brown's name seemed to appear twice. An earlier transaction notice recorded his release as the club made other additions. The subsequent signing is the later roster action; reading only the first notice gives an incomplete picture.

The broader lesson for following the roster is to separate a player's transaction status from his eventual game role. Being on the 53-man list does not announce a starting job or a snap count. It establishes who is available to the team under that roster designation.

Brown's history gives fans a familiar reference point on the interior line. Hunter offers a new name to learn at linebacker. The next useful evidence will be where each appears in the weekly lineup and how coaches deploy them.

That is the part of roster week that continues after the cutdown headlines: turning a list of names into a working group.

A familiar voice and a new arrival

The broadcaster identifies Mike Vrabel and Super Bowl preparation among the subjects. It offers an earlier introduction to the player, not a fresh response to his return to the roster.

Brown's route to New England included time with several organizations. The September announcement notes that the Patriots signed him from Las Vegas' practice squad in October 2024. His subsequent starts at two interior positions explain why his return is more than the addition of an unfamiliar name.

Hunter faces a different kind of transition: learning a new NFL team at the start of his rookie season. His signing should be followed separately from Brown's even though the club announced them together. One storyline is continuity with a known lineman; the other is the development of a newcomer. Keeping those questions separate makes the next roster update considerably easier to interpret.
