Auburn dismisses Xavier Atkins; linebacker says he plans to transfer

The former All-SEC linebacker departs after missing the Georgia upset, with LSU next for the Tigers.

Auburn has dismissed linebacker Xavier Atkins from its football program, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Monday night, and Atkins said he plans to enter the transfer portal at the appropriate time.

The decision follows Atkins' suspension for Saturday's 27-24 win at then-No. 1 Georgia. AL.com's Peter Rauterkus independently confirmed the dismissal with a source, reporting that Atkins was no longer listed on the Tigers' current roster.

Auburn has not publicly detailed the reason for the disciplinary action. Coach Alex Golesh said earlier Monday that the program was still working through Atkins' situation, according to Rauterkus' report. The later dismissal ends the uncertainty over whether he would return to Auburn's defense this season.

Atkins had 37 tackles, three sacks and an interception this season. Last year he led the SEC with 17 tackles for loss and earned first-team All-SEC honors. He began his college career at LSU before transferring to Auburn.

The Tigers face his former school Saturday. Their linebackers already have one game of experience filling the gap: Elijah Melendez and Bryce Deas combined for 17 tackles against Georgia, Rauterkus reported. Melendez also intercepted a pass in the upset.
