Keene earned the job in last week's loss to Texas Tech. The Sun Devils benched Boley at halftime, according to Arizona Sports, and Keene went 25-of-34 for 256 yards and two touchdowns off the bench, per ESPN.
He is a sixth-year senior with a long résumé. Keene started 34 games over two seasons each at Fresno State and UCF, throwing for 8,533 yards, 67 touchdowns and 28 interceptions with a 67.9% completion rate. He transferred to Michigan after that but didn't play there before landing in Tempe.
Boley, a junior who came over from Kentucky, went 3-3 as the starter. He threw for 1,353 yards with 13 touchdowns and five interceptions, and his 49.5 Total QBR explains a lot about why Dillingham moved.
The switch also puts a short clock on Keene. On Arizona Sports' Thursday night show, the hosts were already asking what happens if he doesn't produce as a starter: whether ASU goes back to Boley or gives Jake Fette a look. Dillingham hasn't said anything publicly about that.
Kansas State is the first test. Watch Keene's completion rate and whether the offense moves the way it did in the second half against Texas Tech, because a slow start would bring the Boley-or-Fette question right back.
