The front office is turning over too. Interim general manager John Mozeliak, who took over after Perry Minasian was fired in June, said he will not be the full-time GM in 2027. His contract runs out in December, and he plans to step aside once new ownership is in place. Stan Kroenke is set to take control from Arte Moreno in the first quarter of 2027, and Mozeliak said the next GM will hire the next manager.
"I know I'm not a long-term solution, nor was I looking to be a part of a long-term solution," Mozeliak said, according to The Orange County Register.
Suzuki said the decision did not surprise him. "Obviously with new ownership coming in, they're going to have their touches on things and obviously the manager is a big position," he told the Register. The Angels offered him a special assistant role, but he said he isn't sure he'll take it because other teams have shown interest.
Anaheim has heard the reset pitch before. Suzuki's successor will be the sixth Angels manager since Scioscia's 19-year run ended in 2018. The club hasn't reached the postseason since 2014 and hasn't won a playoff game since 2009, its last American League West title.
Suzuki, a 16-year catcher who won the 2019 World Series with Washington, finished his playing career with the Angels in 2021 and 2022 and then spent three years as Minasian's special assistant.
What to watch: who Kroenke's group puts in charge of baseball operations, and how fast that hire names a manager before spring training.
