That penalty wasn't BYU's only costly flag of the day. Late in regulation UCF was driving for a winning field goal when Jenkins lost the ball on a play ruled a sack. Replay turned it into an incomplete pass, and BYU was called for unsportsmanlike conduct on top of it, according to the Associated Press. The Cougars bailed themselves out by blocking Will Stone's 47-yard attempt. Then they gave the Knights another 15 yards in overtime.
BYU was beaten on the field too. UCF outgained the Cougars 463-373, ran 41 times for 170 yards and didn't turn it over. Jenkins went 25 of 41 for 293 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another. Hornes caught six passes for 137 yards. UCF converted 9 of 16 third downs.
Bachmeier threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns, including a 28-yarder to Legend Glasker in the first overtime, and ran for a score, but he completed only half his 32 passes and threw an interception to Tackett Curtis. Kyler Kasper had 129 receiving yards. BYU ran for 116 yards on 36 carries.
It is the biggest win UCF has ever had by one measure: the AP said the Knights had never beaten a top-five team. They are 4-3 under Scott Frost, who told FOX afterward he could not be happier with how his team finished.
For BYU, the timing stings. The Cougars knocked off then-No. 2 Notre Dame last week and moved up to that same spot, and the AP noted they are the latest unbeaten team to go down in a strange few weeks. At 6-1 and 3-1 in the Big 12, BYU is still in the conference race, but its margin for error is gone.
