What is confirmed
San Francisco announced Thursday that Kirk's practice window is open, which starts a 21-day period for the team to activate him to the 53-man roster. In the same set of moves, the 49ers signed defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo to the active roster and added linebacker Eugene Asante to the practice squad.
Kirk went on injured reserve with a return designation shortly before the season, which guaranteed he would miss at least the first four games. Pro Football Rumors noted that his activation could come in time for Week 6.
The 29-year-old signed a low-risk deal with San Francisco in March after one season in Houston, where he caught 28 passes for 239 yards and one touchdown in 13 games. He topped 1,000 yards in his first Jacksonville season in 2022.
Why it matters now
The 49ers' receiver room is short on bodies. Deebo Samuel (hamstring) and Demarcus Robinson are both unavailable for Week 6. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Robinson will not return from injured reserve until after the Week 8 bye. Ricky Pearsall is out for the season with a knee injury from August, and De'Zhaun Stribling is out for the foreseeable future.
That leaves real targets for a healthy Kirk, mostly over the middle and out of the slot.
What RSO owners should do now
If Kirk is on your IR or taxi spot, keep him there until the 49ers activate him. If he is a free agent in your league, he is worth a cheap claim this week, since the window opening means activation is likely within days or weeks. Expect a complementary role at first, and treat him as a bench or flex option until he logs a game.
What to watch next
Kirk's practice participation on Friday and the 49ers' final Week 6 injury report. A roster activation before the weekend would put him in play right away. If he stays on IR, the bye in Week 8 sets up a cleaner return after it.
