Tiago Splitter’s first Chicago staff is set. The Bulls announced September 14 that Wes Unseld Jr. will return as an assistant, while Blake Ahearn, Jamelle McMillan, Rex Kalamian, Jonah Herscu and Taj Gibson join the assistant-coach group. The organization also reshaped the player-development and video departments.

Martin Rancik was promoted to senior player-development coach, and Jordan Brink was named assistant coach and director of player development. Pete Crawford and LD Williams return as player-development coaches. Jeremiah Bonsu becomes head video coordinator, Micah Burno becomes assistant video coordinator, and Brandon Leftwich, Delvon Johnson and Jayden Hardaway join as video coordinators.

The appointments give Splitter a staff with different kinds of experience. Ahearn spent four seasons as a Memphis assistant and previously led the Austin Spurs to the 2018 G League championship. McMillan worked in player development with Detroit and coached the Motor City Cruise. Kalamian arrives after three seasons with Milwaukee and has held assistant roles with several teams. Herscu brings G League head-coaching experience with the Rip City Remix and previously worked in Portland, Sacramento and with the Lakers.

Taj Gibson’s addition carries a direct Chicago connection. Gibson played nine seasons with the Bulls and now begins his coaching career after 17 NBA seasons, according to reporting cited by NBA insider Shams Charania. Unseld provides continuity as he enters his third season on the Chicago staff.

Splitter took over after coaching Portland last season, a move Axios described as part of new executive vice president Bryson Graham’s effort to build around young talent. The completed staff shows where that effort is focused: teaching, player development and the daily infrastructure around a young roster.
