The Boston Red Sox begin their final Fenway Park homestand Tuesday night against the Cleveland Guardians, with first pitch scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Eastern. Boston enters at 84-72 and Cleveland at 81-75, according to the official MLB game listing, putting both clubs in a late-season series with postseason positioning in view.
Boston's Payton Tolle is listed to start against Cleveland left-hander Logan Messick. Tolle is 9-6 with a 3.02 ERA, while Messick is 12-9 with a 2.57 ERA. The matchup gives the Red Sox a left-on-left test at the front of a three-game set that continues Wednesday and Thursday before Boston hosts the Cubs for the weekend.
The immediate Red Sox question is how much urgency carries into the homestand after the club secured a playoff place. The Guardians still have ground to cover at 81-75, so the opening game can shape the tone of a series that matters more to Cleveland's position than to Boston's place in the postseason field. Boston's official schedule lists the game at Fenway and the club's 84-72 record; Cleveland's official schedule confirms the road series and Messick's probable start.
Boston Globe's same-day lineup and preview report was checked for the current batting orders and game context. The official Red Sox and Guardians X and YouTube lanes were also searched for a dated, event-specific pregame clip. No suitable native item could be verified for this game before publication, so the preview uses the sourced matchup facts without an unrelated video.
The Red Sox and Guardians meet at Fenway at 6:45 p.m. Eastern Tuesday. The result will begin a three-game test of Cleveland's remaining position chase and Boston's preparation for the postseason.
