The Bears used practice-squad elevations to cover two positions before their opener. Chicago signed quarterback Miller Moss and elevated him alongside receiver Kaden Davis on Sept. 12 for the following day's game against Carolina. Defensive back Keidron Smith was released from the practice squad in the corresponding move.
The quarterback decision followed an uncertain week for Tyson Bagent. The Bears' Friday injury report listed him as questionable with a back injury after he missed practice throughout the week. Ben Johnson said the team was comfortable using veteran Case Keenum behind Caleb Williams if necessary.
Davis had already given Chicago some preseason production: five catches for 93 yards, with four catches and 88 yards coming against Cleveland. He spent training camp with the Bears before joining their practice squad.
Moss also knew the offense from the offseason and camp. He signed as an undrafted rookie after finishing his college career at Louisville, following earlier seasons at USC.
These moves supplied game-day options without making either elevation a permanent active-roster promotion. The team's announcement specified that standard elevations return to the practice squad after the game. Future availability therefore depends on a fresh roster decision, not simply on having dressed for the opener.
