Maryland’s Nebraska game offers a warning about judging the final margin
The Terrapins generated first-half offense before turnovers and a second-half slowdown reshaped a 48-23 loss.

Maryland’s last game gives Ohio State fans a reason to look beyond the final score. Nebraska’s official account of its 48-23 victory says the Terrapins produced 300 first-half yards and led 23-14 before the game turned. Maryland then managed 95 total yards after halftime. Those are two very different halves within the same result.
The first-half output establishes that the Terrapins were capable of moving the ball in that matchup. It does not guarantee a similar start in Columbus. The second-half slowdown establishes that Nebraska found ways to limit that production. It also does not tell us that Ohio State will use the same approach. The useful scouting evidence is the change within the game, rather than an assumption that the margin measures every possession equally.
Nebraska identifies a major turning point: Dwayne McDougle III returned an interception 81 yards for a touchdown while Maryland was driving late in the first half. The play removed an offensive opportunity and supplied points to the opponent in the same sequence. That is why turnover risk can matter so much when evaluating a team that has already shown it can gain yards.
For Buckeyes viewers, our analysis is to keep Maryland’s ability to generate offense separate from its ability to protect a promising position. Early yardage can make a scoring target plausible while a later mistake prevents the total from growing. A game can remain competitive for a stretch and still finish with a substantial gap. Those possibilities matter if your card includes both a scoring question and a margin question.
Watch what Maryland does after a stalled possession or a negative play. Can the next drive restart the offense, or does the opponent control the sequence? That is a viewing lens, not a prediction of a particular turnover or a claim about personnel changes.
The Buckeyes’ official schedule lists Saturday’s game for 4:15 p.m. ET at Ohio Stadium. Maryland’s Nebraska performance supplies recent evidence of both opportunity and vulnerability. The Buckeyes still have to produce their own stops and their own scoring drives.
