Ohio State’s Iowa passing totals were eye-catching, but another pair of numbers helps explain the shape of the afternoon. The official game-center statistics list the Buckeyes at 8-for-15 on third down and 38:02 in possession. Iowa had the ball for 21:58. Ohio State converted enough crucial snaps to keep building opportunities and limit the time available to the opponent.
The conversion rate works out to a little over 53 percent. That is a description of 15 attempts in one game, not a season-long rate. It also leaves seven third downs on which Ohio State did not convert. A successful afternoon can include stalled possessions, and evaluating the offense fairly means keeping both parts of the number in view.
Possession time supplies context rather than a complete explanation. A team can hold the ball and still fail to score; another can score quickly without needing a long drive. The Iowa game featured both offensive production and time with the ball. The statistics do not establish that one alone caused the victory or that every longer drive was more effective than every shorter one.
For Maryland week, our analysis is to watch the down before the down. A manageable third down gives an offense more options than a situation demanding a much longer gain. The final conversion count cannot explain all of those distances, but the live game can. Fans should pay attention to what a successful first or second down leaves for the next snap.
The ending at Iowa offers one particularly clear example of control. Ohio State’s recap says the Buckeyes possessed the ball for the remainder of the game after Iowa’s fourth-quarter touchdown and two-point conversion. Whatever the final scoring margin, the opponent cannot build another drive without regaining possession.
Saturday’s scoring and margin calls remain separate outcomes. Sustained possession may help create chances, but it does not award a point threshold on its own. Watch Ohio State’s ability to stay on the field, then judge the published questions by the final statistics they actually name.
