Dansby Swanson is the Cubs’ nominee for the 2026 Roberto Clemente Award. MLB announced the selections Monday, recognizing the shortstop for his community work ahead of Roberto Clemente Day on September 15.
Swanson is a first-time nominee, according to the league’s announcement. Each club selects one player for the award, which recognizes character, philanthropy and contributions on and off the field.
The nomination follows a $200,000 commitment to an inclusive playground in Evanston. Swanson and his wife, Mallory, announced the donation through their Purpose and Calling Foundation on August 25, Athlon Sports reported.
The foundation consulted local children, adults and community groups about the project. The August announcement described work still moving through design and development; the playground had not been announced as open.

How the vote works
Fans can vote through Sunday, September 27, at MLB’s official award page. The combined fan result counts as one vote on the selection panel, which includes MLB and media representatives, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Clemente’s family.
The winner will be honored during the 2026 World Series. Swanson has received the Cubs’ nomination; the national award remains to be decided.
Clemente died in a December 1972 plane crash while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The annual award honors his humanitarian work.
