Chris Olave: why receptions and receiving yards tell different stories
Olave opened with three busy games. The Vikings matchup offers another look at how New Orleans gets him the ball.

Chris Olave's first three 2026 games produced three busy receiving lines: 10 catches for 182 yards at Detroit, eight for 86 at Baltimore, and nine for 107 against Las Vegas. Those entries on the Saints' official player page give Ohio State fans a useful example of why receptions and receiving yards deserve separate attention. Saints player page
The Saints' schedule puts Atlanta at New Orleans on Monday, October 5, at 8:15 p.m. Eastern before Minnesota visits on Sunday, October 11, at 1 p.m. The three-game sample describes Olave's September production entering that two-game stretch. Saints schedule
The Detroit and Baltimore lines illustrate the distinction neatly. Olave had two fewer receptions in Baltimore, but the difference in yardage was much greater. Catch volume describes how many passes became completions to a player. Receiving yardage describes the distance those completions added. A receiver can contribute frequently without producing the same distance every week.
For the Vikings game, watch where the completions happen. A short throw can become a long gain after the catch. A deeper completion can come down near a defender and end almost immediately. Both appear in receiving yards, while the route and the run after the catch require watching the play itself.
This is particularly useful when answering a precise prediction. A receptions question asks about completed passes to Olave. A yardage question can be affected heavily by one long play. A touchdown question depends on a narrower part of the offense's opportunities. None is a substitute for the others.
The Saints list Olave's 2025 season at 100 receptions for 1,163 yards and nine touchdowns. That provides a full-season reference, not a promise about Minnesota. The next game should be judged from its own possessions and final record. Before kickoff, check the Saints' current availability report; once the game begins, follow both the number of completions and the distance they create.
